Energy Conservation Solar Power Initiatives

Atlantic City’s City Island Wastewater Treatment Plant’s 40-mgd ( million gallons/day) activated sludge plant finds success by combining strategic energy conservation practices, with some of the largest wind and solar initiatives in the wastewater sector. It’s a committed and combined effort for rate stabilization and environmentalism. The plant saves more than $1.6 million per year in energy costs. Additionally, energy represents 20 percent of the plant’s overall budget, down from 30 percent only a few years ago. The efforts have even turned the plant into a tourist attraction, and its operation has received numerous awards from the National Association for Clean Water Agencies. The City Island plant realized that the first step toward energy savings was to reduce consumption of electricity and natural gas. As such, it targeted improvements in aeration and bio solids processes. While working on energy savings, ACUA (Atlantic County Utilities Authority) began discussions with Jersey-Atlantic Wind LLC, about using wind power to supply part of the plant’s electrical needs, as part of a long-term lease/power purchase agreement. Recently, ACUA moved forward with the $12.5 million wind farm which is considered the first coastal wind farm in the northeastern United States.  Since the start of the operation, it has met nearly 60 percent of the plant’s power needs. The notion of cost-effective wind power drove ACUA to consider solar power, as well. The City Island plant is currently looking into more ways to save energy and help protect the environment. South Monmouth Has Paved Way for Mobile Sewer Design

South Monmouth Has Paved Way for Mobile Sewer Design

There is a new plan that has come into action for residents of South Monmouth and beyond. The aftermath of disastrous storms had the City springing into action, thereby developing a better sewer system to include mobile pump stations. Gathering all their resources and expertise the Sewerage Authority has turned pump stations into transportable units. Engineers of this project have put together a list of recommendations when implementing such a plan. When designing a mobile pump station, the noise level and weight restrictions should be taken into consideration. Also, consider the amount of equipment that is held in the trailer and the appearance. Depending on where the mobile unit is located, most residents prefer it to be congruous with the environment. For instance, if the area is beach or summer-like than the mobile unit should reflect that, so it blends in. It is also important to decide ahead of time how functional the unit must be: how far the pump station will be moved (using the most efficient routing) and how quickly it can be transported. Frequent Flooding Prompts Sewer Line Inspection

Frequent Flooding Prompts Sewer Line Inspection

The community of Emerson is undergoing a pipeline survey due to recent flooding problems within the borough. Several sewer lines will be inspected, cleaned and drained. Residents of the neighborhood have voiced their concerns after the heavy rains, which prompted the City to take action. This month, the council approved several locations for survey of the pipelines, including Vivian Ave. and Powell rd. So far, there have been seven areas of the underground infrastructure that have reported issues which have been attributed to probable causes of flooding. The City is using a camera within several hundred feet of pipe. This method has most accurately detected the sections of difficulty. There is a budget put in place for the evaluations, which will also include, analyzing specific sizing and structure of the affected pipeline. Perma-Liner Industries is here to help. We have been specializing in the most advanced trenchless, Cured in Place pipeline technology since 1999. Our products and equipment, including our state of the art Perma-Lateral Lining System, will repair and rehabilitate pipes, bridge missing pipe sections and eliminate roots and infiltration. Sewer and Water 101

Sewer and Water 101

Summer is indeed here in all its glory.  We know that means rainfall is here, too.  In fact, in many parts of the country we have had record setting storms.  Precipitation can heavily contribute to an overloaded sewer system.  As a nation, we have over 700 communities that utilize combined sewer systems.  There are some Cities that have separate sewer systems but this is no small financial investment.  Even so, municipalities have the burden of making sure these systems are functioning. It can pose a health risk and even more financial strain if they are not. There are small contributions the residents of any community can make to keep overflows to a minimum.  With a combined effort, each small attempt will add up to bigger and better successes.  A few good suggestions are:  1. use less water during a storm.  Showering, flushing the toilet and doing laundry should be avoided, if possible. 2. Please don’t litter.  Strom drains can be affected when garbage is near and subsequently can raise the possibility of overflows even in dry weather.  3.  When in doubt of how to accurately dispose of household products, consult with your local waste management dept. 4.  You’ll save money on your water bill AND be a team player at the same time with a mindful approach to how much water you are using.  Also, remember to fix any leaky areas in your home. Perma-Liner Industries is here to help you.  Before a problem exists, we can repair and rehabilitate the pipelines in your underground infrastructure saving you time, energy and money.  Since 1999, we have developed state of the art equipment and we specialize in trenchless, Cured in Place Pipe that is eco-friendly.  Call us or go online to www.perma-liner.com to find out how we can assist...
